Yesterday at the London Book Fair I participated in an Oxford-style debate called “The Great Debate”.  Having been one of the biggest (and most fun) events at last year’s London Book Fair, The Great Debate returns this year with the motion “In the fight for survival, outsiders and start-ups are taking on today’s heavyweight publishers and will ultimately deliver a knock-out punch.”.  The debaters included Evan Schnittman, Managing Director of Bloomsbury Publishing; Fionnuala Duggan, Managing Director, CourseSmart; Bob Young, CEO & Founder, Lulu; and yours truly.  I don’t believe I have to tell you who are supporting and who are against the motion :-)

The motion was purposely provocative, which was great as it made sure the debate was entertaining.  It was great fun for me as I haven’t participated in any Oxford-style debate for a long long time. If you want to know who won at the end, Publishers Weekly had a great coverage here.

Here is what I had prepared in advance.  Of course, the live version was a bit different.  E.g. In the beginning I added “I wonder why Bob and I are using iPads to take notes while our opponents are using paper” :-)

Author Interview: Wendy Mass

Wattpad brings you a guest post originally published in Teen Ink:

Author-Wendy Mass

By TheJust, Ellenton, FL

Her most popular book is probably “A Mango Shaped Space”, but author Wendy Mass has written many other novels for pre-teens and young adults, including “Leap Year”, “Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life” and her fractured fairy tale series, “Twice Upon a Time”.

I was recently given the opportunity to interview Ms. Mass for Teen Ink.

RH: When did you first get interested in writing?

WM: I wrote my first short story in 5th grade, and was hooked! I co-wrote it with my 2 sisters and it was about our cat who turned into a goat and broke into the neighbor’s house!

RH: When did you know you wanted to be an author?

WM: By the time I was in high school, I knew this was what I wanted to do. I spent most of college writing short stories, and then when I graduated I got a job in publishing, so even though I wasn’t the one writing the books, I got to have a hand in bringing them to life.

RH: What was your inspiration behind “A Mango Shaped Space”? Do you actually know someone like Mia?

WM: I didn’t know anyone with synesthesia before I started writing the book, but as I went along I met many. I think it’s a lot more common than people think. Just start asking your friends the colors of various letters and I bet some can tell you!

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein

If you have ever had a dog, you will love this book. If you don’t have a dog, you will want one before you reach the last page. I enjoyed The Art of Racing in the Rain from beginning to end. Told from an interesting perspective, it makes you think in a new way. While some parts are sweet and tender, others are deep and dark. You may want to keep a box of tissues nearby.

Friday Night Lights

Wattpad brings you a guest post originally published in Teen Ink:

Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger

By Skyler M., Sneads Ferry

If you’ve ever been to Texas, you know football is huge. A town there is not measured by its people or how much land it covers, but by the quality of the football program and the number of state championships its team has won. Friday Night Lights tells the story of such a place.

The town of Odessa, Texas prides itself on having the winningest football program in not only Texas, but the entire country. They come into the 1988 season looking for their first state championship under their new and untested coach.

One of the reasons I love this book is that it’s not just about football - it also focuses on race and prejudice.

A Crash Course on Steampunk

Wattpad brings you a guest post from Featured Story writer Darrell Pitt:

What if spaceships ran on steam power?

What if cars and trucks and ships and trains were all steam operated? What if we built towers that stretched into orbit so that people could catch a lift into space? What if airships dominated the skies, carrying passengers across the world?

What sort of world would that be?

That would be the world of steampunk.

It’s a sub-genre of science fiction and one of the most popular up and coming genres of today. Think of Victorian England and Sherlock Holmes and War of the Worlds and you’ll begin to have an idea of what steampunk is all about.

It’s books like The Steampunk Detective (by yours truly), Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld, Boneshaker by Cherie Priest and Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare. It’s movies like The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, The Golden Compass, The Prestige and The City of Lost Children.

But it’s more than this. Steampunk has become a fashion statement too. It’s famous for brass and leather and corsets for women and coats and tails and top hats for men.

Accessories abound too – brass rimmed aviator goggles, parasols and canes, hats and gloves. The list goes on. Steampunk conventions are held in many countries. The internet abounds with steampunk related websites. Steampunkers happily parade the streets in full steampunk outfits.

In many ways it’s more than a genre. It’s an art movement. It’s a lifestyle.

So what’s the allure to steam? Why do people like steampunk?

Book Review: The Princess Bride

Wattpad brings you a guest post from Teen Ink magazine:

The Princess Bride

By Adam H., Tonawanda, NY

Before I begin this review, I must admit I am a little biased. This book is one of my favorite stories because, although it is a fairy tale complete with a hero, giants and a handsome Prince, it has many elements of contemporary novels and motion pictures.

The author, William Goldman, claims that this story was first read to him as a child, by his father. When he grew up, he found that his father had taken the original novel, (by S. Morganstern), and given him a “good parts” version. Since he loved the book so much, he republished his own version of Princess Bride.

Book Review: Girl With A Pearl Earring

Wattpad brings you a guest post originally published in Teen Ink magazine:

Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier

By a-s-z, los angeles, CA

I picked this up when I was looking for a book to take to the beach. I had in mind some bird-brained, pink-covered chic-lit that was at least entertaining. But I finally decided on Girl with a Pearl Earring; at least it was required reading for school.

Johannes Vermeer’s renowned painting, around which this novel is based, adorns the cover. Initially, I assumed it was one of those books with a pretty cover but no substance, like Twilight. And the few reviews from friends didn’t help. According to them, I was about to read a boring drag of a book. Great!

When I began, I thought, Okay, this isn’t so bad.

Set in Beaufort, North Carolina, in the 1950s, A Walk to Remember tells the story of 17-year-old Landon Carter, who learns to live life differently after meeting Jamie Sullivan. Initially, Landon is the kind of guy who cares too much about what people think of him. But when Jamie comes into the picture, he only cares about being with her.
