We’re Celebrating The Release of Lindsey Summer’s Textrovert by Asking Millennials and Teens About Their Texting Habits

50% Admit They’ve Texted From Another Person’s Phone Pretending to be Them

A few years ago, Wattpad Star Lindsey Summers (@DoNotMicrowave) was out for a walk when she noticed a guy in front of her drop his phone. As she picked it up to return it to him, she was struck with an idea for a story about what happens when phones get swapped and text messages have to be relayed. This idea became The Cell Phone Swap, a mega-hit on Wattpad with 90 million reads.

Today, we’re very excited to share that Lindsey’s story is available in bookstores and online. Published as Textrovert by KCP Loft, an imprint of Kids Can Press, the novel is edited and expanded from the Wattpad version. “I never imagined writing The Cell Phone Swap on Wattpad would lead to a publishing deal!” Lindsey exclaims.

“Texting is something everyone can relate to,” she adds. In Textrovert, Lindsey explores the confusion and hilarity that ensues when phones get swapped. Funny, surprising, and full of heart, this romance offers something for every reader. “Texting gives the two main characters in Textrovert a chance to open up and say things they normally wouldn’t reveal. Of course, when they finally meet, they have to learn how to transition from text to IRL. Something I’m sure a lot of us struggle with!”

While serializing the story on Wattpad, Lindsey received a ton of comments and messages from fans sharing their own adventures in texting. In honor of the release of Textrovert, we asked Lindsey’s fans and other teens and millennials about their texting habits and the results are pretty interesting. We wonder what Textrovert characters Keeley and Talon would say!

We love to see Wattpadders realize their dreams - congratulations, Lindsey!

Meet The Wattpad Stars: Gavin Hetherington

Today we introduce you to Gavin Hetherington, a pioneer who explores the chat story genre on our new app Tap by Wattpad.

Gavin joined Wattpad in 2014 after he came across a successful Wattpad writer on Twitter. He decided to upload the first story in his Abysmal Sanctuary series and watched as the accolades began to roll in. Everything changed when Gavin was discovered by Wattpad Star Kelly Anne Blount who invited him on stage at WattCon in New York in October 2016 to talk about his Wattpad writing experience.

Since then, Gavin has had some great moments working with Wattpad. One of his strongest memories though, came during a train ride home after being invited to be a Wattpad Star:

“It took a while for me to believe it, but as soon as I did, I was overjoyed...the first moment I got to sit down by myself and really think about what happened, I cried a little because grown men cry too when they realise one of their dreams just came true.”

Now Gavin is tackling a new challenge, chat style storytelling: “The best way to rejuvenate your creativity is through doing something totally out there...a writer needs a challenge to ensure that our imaginations are still in check.”

His first story, The Riddling of Rhiannon, showcases the tension and pacing that makes these chat stories “a 5-minute adrenalin boosts [that] gets you excited and scared and hungry for more.”

Gavin’s Tips for Chat Style Writers:

  • Open Big: Tap requires that immediate rush that you don’t get on Wattpad because the stories are longer, so you usually have to wait for that big bang.

  • Have Fun: Write a conversation you would find yourself having in real life, or recreate scenes from your own life just to get started and to really nail the authenticity of voice

  • Brainstorm: When I get asked to write a story, I have a complete idea of what it will be about. For example, for ‘The Babysitter,’ I just imagined what a mother’s worst nightmare would be and that would be the realization that you’ve left your kids under the care of a psychopath. Having a scenario will help you immensely and it will get you really excited to write it.

Gavin has this to say about the appeal of horror-focused chat stories: “Tap is immediate and helps us impatient folk who devour scary stories in one go. That’s probably why the Horror genre is popular on Tap; they’re exhilarating to read, and I have read quite a few [stories] on Tap now.”

In the future, he plans to experiment with mystery and romance themed chat stories. He’s also interested in using Tap to promote the same positive messages of female and LGBT empowerment that can be found in his Wattpad stories.

“It’s remarkable how revolutionary Tap feels already, and it hasn’t even been two months since it launched!...Not only can it stand alone and provide entertaining stories, but I’m imagining how complimentary it will be to my own, longer works on Wattpad. I’m even planning on doing a full-length retelling of my ghost story, Fen of Stagnant Waters, on Tap in the form of messages.”

Meet the Wattpad Stars: Write Affair Winner Darly Jamison

When you ignore self-doubt and put yourself out there, great things can happen. That’s what Darly Jamison (aka @Monrosey) learned when her story Strawberry Wine was awarded a book deal with Kensington Publishing, America’s leading romance publisher.

As the winner of The Write Affair Contest, Darly joins Kensington’s roster of writers and becomes the latest addition to the growing list of Wattpad Stars who are now published authors. But it almost didn’t happen.

“I debated entering,” she says when we catch up with her at her home in midwest U.S. “On a whim, I decided to submit Strawberry Wine and then immediately regretted it. I figured there was no way in the world I would win.” Fortunately, Darly’s insecurities didn’t prevail, and her original Wattpad story is now available for purchase online and in bookstores.

When asked about her journey on Wattpad, Darly tells us: “writing had always been something I'd wanted to do, ever since I was very little.” She first discovered Wattpad during her downtime at work, and quickly realized she’d stumbled onto the perfect outlet for her story ideas. “I didn't think anyone would ever find my stories among the millions posted, so there was no fear when writing them.” But readers did find Darly’s stories, and to her amazement, they keep asking for more.

It’s why social media played an integral role in shaping how Darly interacts with her readers and other Wattpad storytellers. “Social media has made the writing experience extremely interactive. Never before have readers and writers been able to connect to the degree that online sites allow,” she says. “If it weren't for social media, I'd still be lost in worlds built by other authors. Now ... I'm creating them myself.”

Strawberry Wine is not the first time Darly’s been noticed on Wattpad. She was recently accepted into the Wattpad Stars program that offers opportunities to contribute original stories to brand campaigns. “I've had stories added to several different campaigns and was also invited by Wattpad and Warner Brothers to write a short horror story for The Gallows Movie,” she says. “I'm grateful every day to be a part of such a selective and innovative program. Wattpad has some major plans, and I'm thrilled to be a part of it all!”

Darly offers this advice for new writers: “the advice I have for new writers is the advice I still follow myself—write as much as you can and read even more.” Darly’s love of reading other stories on Wattpad is how she continues to grow her skills. “I recently had someone tell me that it's obvious I'm a reader because it shines through in the way I write,” Darly says. “I firmly believe that reading nurtures writing.”

As for those creeping voices of self-doubt? For Darly, the Wattpad community is where she finds the confidence to keep going. “Putting myself out there has been worth it, mostly because Wattpad readers and authors are so nice and supportive. I've made many wonderful friends since joining Wattpad and have met the most talented authors. It never ceases to amaze me just how big our community is!”

Tell us a bit about your Wattpad experience

I joined Wattpad after I had just returned to the US. I had been living in Korea and I couldn’t seem to change my sleeping patterns. I thought I would read something to help me get to bed so I looked for a free book app on my phone. Wattpad came up and one of the first books I read was The Bad Boy Stole My Bra. I was devastated because it wasn’t finished at the time. It was my first experience reading a serialized story. I soon began binge reading all sorts of books from different genres. I became addicted!

The first story I wrote was Bones of the Demon King. The only reason I started writing was because I wanted to make a book cover. I didn’t think anyone was going to read it and Wattpad ended up putting it on a Friday the 13th reading list and then it got featured. That same year I won a Watty for my story Unhinged and the following year I did a promotional campaign for Paramount Pictures and was invited into the Stars Program. It’s incredible how things have progressed. I’m proud of everything I’ve accomplished and grateful for all the opportunities Wattpad has given me. A few months ago, I was asked to speak at the Canadian Salon Series. I cannot tell you how excited I am to represent Wattpad and hopefully I’ll do a good job and spread the love I have for Wattpad.

Where were you when you found out that you were selected for the Wattpad Stars program? What did it feel like? Have you participated in any brand campaigns since then?

I know exactly where I was at. Is it weird that I remember? I was in my office. LOL. I always have my phone with me or within reach and I typically see my e-mail notifications right away. At first I honestly thought [Wattpad] had invited me by mistake. I was so excited and at the same time I couldn’t believe it. It was a surreal moment.

I have participated in a few brand campaigns. I wrote Phantom Lens for Paramount Pictures to help promote their film Paranormal Activity. I also wrote some bonus chapters for my story Consumed to help promote The Exorcist for Fox Television. More recently, I wrote Pure. It was a short story inspired by the film, A Cure For Wellness, for 20th Century Fox. I even got a mention in an online Variety article because of that story (I’m still amazed by that). Being able to work with these brands has been INCREDIBLE! If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be writing stories to help promote major films, I would’ve laughed at you. I’ve always been a voracious reader and if I can’t physically read, I listen to audio books. I never thought I’d be on the other end writing stories that people all over the world would be reading. I can definitely say that my writing confidence has increased and I owe that to Wattpad.

What can attendees of your session expect?

I really hope that anyone that attends my session can learn how to use Wattpad to their advantage. Yes, Wattpad is an online library…but it’s also so much more than that. I want attendees to understand the power Wattpad has behind it and how they can use that power to help gain visibility in their writing. Among other things, we’ll also go over establishing yourself as a digital writer and serializing your story effectively.

What’s your advice for new writers? What’s your advice for reaching people on Wattpad?

New writers that join this site might feel overwhelmed and frustrated when it comes to attracting an audience. My number one bit of advice is not to compare yourself to other writers. It will drive you bonkers! Never let that discouraging voice in the back of your head convince you that your writing isn’t good enough or that you’ll never have a high amount of reads. Be patient and eventually, readers will find you. Tag your stories, have an eye-catching cover, write a good synopsis, and most importantly write the story you want to read. It sounds cheesy but it’s true.

Also, remember that Wattpad is a social platform. INTERACT! Visit the forums. Read and comment. Make friends. Then, just like me, you too will become addicted to Wattpad.

This is going to sound totally weird but I enjoy writing mystery/thrillers because I love surprising my readers. My stories are generally a good mix of everything. They usually have a little bit of horror, some romance, and the mystery/thriller aspect to them. Serializing stories is the best because readers will tell you who they think the baddie is in their comments and I absolutely love it when they’re wrong!

If they’re too close to being right, I can add a red herring or two. It’s like a game between me and them. Can I outsmart them? I have learned that readers automatically peg certain types of characters as the antagonist depending on how much importance I place on them in my stories. My repeat readers even look for clues in my cast lists! Sometimes I tell myself that I want to write a romance or a fantasy (I have major outlines for both) but I always go back to writing mystery/thrillers.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I’d just like to say thank you to Wattpad, my readers, and my writer friends. Being able to have a creative outlet that I can share with other people is something I’m really appreciative of and I cannot express to you how grateful I am to have stumbled upon Wattpad.

PS: I know it’s SXSW and Spring Break but if you live in the Austin, Texas area, do come to the Canadian Salon session at the Austin Club! It’ll be a lot of fun and I’d love to meet some fellow Wattpadders!

Another Dream Come True: Isabelle Ronin’s Chasing Red to be Published by Sourcebooks

Exactly one year ago, Isabelle Ronin finished serializing her story Chasing Red on Wattpad. Today, we’re thrilled to share that Sourcebooks, a leading independent book publisher, has acquired the worldwide English rights to Isabelle’s story. Sourcebooks will release Chasing Red in two volumes, and the first one will be available this September.

Readers around the world quickly became obsessed with Isabelle’s story about a cynical straight-A college student and a notorious basketball player. In fact, Chasing Red is one of the most-read Wattpad stories of 2016. Fans spent a whopping 148 million minutes, the equivalent of 282 years, reading Isabelle’s work!

Chasing Red has a voracious fan base that has created thousands of reviews, multiple trailers, fan art, and even a petition to turn the story into a major motion picture.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for the positivity, support, and love from my readers,” said Isabelle Ronin. “They helped me believe in myself. Knowing they were on the other end of the story, waiting for my next update, kept me writing.”

The story’s massive engagement that has also lead several international publishers to acquire Chasing Red, including Hachette Livre, HarperCollins Germany, Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, and Mondadori.

“We’re so happy that we could play a role in helping Isabelle realize her dream of being a published author,” said Ashleigh Gardner, head of partnerships for Wattpad Studios.

“I was once struggling to find my place in life - my purpose. Sharing my story on Wattpad and connecting with so many incredible people in the community helped me realize a dream I’ve had most of my life.” Isabelle Ronin added.

Congratulations, Isabelle, we can’t wait to see Chasing Red in bookstores around the world! You can pre-order your copy of Chasing Red, here.
